For 40 x 40 cm pillow
The front piece is made of 24 triangles and 6 half-triangles. The back is a square made of dc only.
Yarn: DK / 8 ply
Hook: 4 mm
Gauge: 9 dc = 5 cm
How to make a triangle:
On the start of every row you make a dc in the same st as you start with the 3 ch. You're increasing with one st on the start of every row.
Row 1: 4ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in first ch, turn [2 dc]
Row 2: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same st as the ch (where the arrow points), 1dc, turn [3 dc]
Row 3: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in first st and every st on the row [4 dc]
Row 4: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in first st and every st on the row [5 dc]
Row 5-12: Continue the same way, increasing 1dc in the start of each row, until you have 13 dc. Cut the yarn, leaving 20 cm tail for sewing the triangles together later.
How to make a half-triangle:
(You wil increase in every other row).
Row 1: 4ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in first ch, turn [2 dc]
Row 2: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same st as the ch, 1dc, turn [3 dc]
Row 3: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next st, 1dc (where the arrow points), turn [3 dc]
Row 4: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same st as the ch, 2dc, turn [4 dc]
Row 5: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 3dc, turn [4 dc]
Row 6: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same st as the ch, 3dc, turn [5 dc]
Row 7: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 4dc, turn [5 dc]
Row 8: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same st as the ch, 4dc, turn [6 dc]
Row 9: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 5dc, turn [6 dc]
Row 10: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same st as the ch, 5dc, turn [7 dc]
Row 11: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 6dc, turn [7 dc]
Row 12: 3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same st as the ch, 6dc, cut yarn [8 dc]
Lay out the triangles in the pattern you like. Stitch them together using the long tails.
Make the back piece:
Start: Ch 67.
Row 1: 1dc in third st from hook, dc to end of row. Turn [64 dc]
Row 2: 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), dc to end of row. Turn [64 dc]
* Repeat row 2 until you have 35 rows.*
Make stripes in other colours if you like that.
Row 36: ch1, sc to end of row, turn
Row 37: (Buttonhole row) 1ch, 16sc, (2ch, skip 1 sc), 5 sc, (2ch , skip 1 sc), 5sc, (2ch , skip 1 sc), 6sc, (2ch , skip 1 sc), 5sc, (2ch , skip 1 sc), 5sc, (2ch , skip 1 sc), 16sc, cut yarn.
My back piece needed some gentle blocking to end up the same size as the front… Do this before you sew the front and back together.
Find 6 pretty buttons from your collection and sew them in their right places.
There you have it! A new pillow for your couch or favourite chair!
ETA:
I have made a scond pillow in this pattern, and tried a different opening on the back. (More envelope style).
Here I made the buttonholes on the last row of colour. And then I made a smaller ractangle in only white dc to cover the rest of the back. It overlaps a little bit.

The colours are lovely, I've been watching it grow via instagram. Thanks for the tutorial, I made my first crochet triangles this week but mine are a different shape, for bunting. This looks like a project I could have a go at too.
